Clean Gutters are Good for the House

SERVPRO® of St. Clair Shores: We Appreciate Our Community

We all learned to treat others as we want to be treated, so we provide information that may result in a little less business for us, but a lot less trouble for people and business in and around Roseville.

Our Minds are on Gutters

Our parents don’t have to worry; our minds are not in the gutters, they’re on the topic of gutters.

Here’s why:

  • Gutters direct rainwater off roofs, away from building foundations, and out of any mortar between bricks or stone.
  • Without this diversion, water weakens the building’s foundation. SERVPRO of St. Clair Shores is available to remediate the structure, but we want to help you avoid damage.
  • Excess water may damage a roof, leading to indoor leaks that stain ceilings and weaken support beams. In the worst cases, the rain comes indoors – not good.
  • Water can end up flooding the lowest floor.
  • Leaf- or debris-filled gutters provide homes for mosquitoes, small rodents, and other life forms that can thrive elsewhere without causing damage to human homes or other structures.
  • Birds and other animals that make their homes in the gutters can be very territorial, and therefore threatening to anyone who comes near.
  • Mold, mildew, and animal waste can destroy the roof and the rest of the house.
  • Fires can spread from one structure to another by igniting dried materials in a gutter.
  • Clogged gutters get too heavy, tearing the support brackets, and sometimes the roof shingles or tiles.

Not Exactly Buried Treasure

Homeowners and others have found some unexpected items in gutters. Balls and kites are expected, but tennis rackets are not. Someone must have had a major tantrum. Other items:

  • Snakes -- how did they get up there?
  • Large plants – wind-borne seeds settle in and grow large enough that the roots cause roof damage.
  • Toy cars, action figures, and dolls – it makes sense that a frisbee could end up in the gutters, but not these toys.
  • Feral cats – at least they scare away some of the other animals
  • Remote control device – one teen really didn’t want his parents to have control of the tv
  • One shoe – why not both?
  • Trees – some gutters are neglected for long enough that trees have started growing.
